Introduction
Attention!
My dear readers and friends, this horrific and mystical story, entitled “Kronos: The Infinity” I wrote in honor of the greatest American man of letter, the exceptional mystic of his time, Sir Howard Phillips Lovecraft, whose works inspired me most once for creating new strangest worlds of mine.
The most outrageous and outstanding novel of Lovecraft I consider “From Beyond” (written in 1920). I concentrate your attention that this novel inspired me greatly, and since I have read it, I always wanted to create something sort of, with the same characters, with the same horror atmosphere, but my own story. And I did it in my personal way.
My work – “Kronos: The Infinity” it is my personal expression of gratitude towards Sir Lovecraft’s literary creations, and especially, to my favorite one “From Beyond”.
And I plead you, my dears, do not think, that I just have stolen the story concept of “From Beyond” and presented you a kind of “remake”. Not a second!
“Kronos: The Infinity” is the personal literary work of mine, Albert Alcherbad, only inspired by Lovecraft’s “From Beyond”, and written in its honor!
But the very interesting thing is that I just borrowed the very first sentence of H.P.‘s “Beyond” and developed another point of view of this beginning, made a self-contained (spin-off kind) description of the story.
And what really happened from all of this, now you experience, My Friends!
Kronos: The Infinity
The most outrageous, unbelievable, and moreover, rationally unexplainable story happened with my good friend, Mr. Raiter, in a Dear Lord forgotten place with the name of its “Deadfield” — and it terribly occurred to be once in the severest winter ever been in the whole world a few years ago. It seems that some eons past since those times. And just like I remember myself having that strangest letter of his, and reading it passingly right now, nervously holding it in my own hands.
As my old chap, Raiter, claimed later on, it was the Devilish Force itself which had brought my poor friend to that fearsome town in the edge of the Universe.
Herewith I honestly felt that my companion, revealing his not the most pleasant journey, also believed sincerely in the existence of some life-beyond evil spirit. Well, at least he began to believe in it from that moment as he came across with this eternal and ancient substance directly.
“Damn on you, pal!” I turned to Raiter.
“So anyway, what was the higher importance to start your road in the coldest winter ever seen? And why have you chosen such a nasty winter-period?” I asked him dazedly — at that moment I was full of extreme curiosity during our silent evening conversation, when we drank tea with a bit of mulled wine in my nice living-room. “And, please, mind this fact that from the very beginning of your trek I tried to deter you variously in order to prevent any possibility to get into troubles.”
“Oh, yes. I truly know that now you will be proud of yourself, Arnold,” Raiter stretched his hand slightly upon my eyes. “But believe me amiably! That thing which I had to face with, in any case, destructed all my agnostic views after all.”
“Well. Agree. And I always knew that you’ve been faithful to the fixity of your views.” I nodded. “And even now you have the reputation of the complete agnostic-gentleman, trusted everything that can be seen or can be touched lively, such as the sun, the space, the bread, the cheese and the constant eternity of the Universe. But how can I surely take your story you tell me now as a pure facts?” I wondered.
“Without any doubt, that terror which I’ve experienced at that almost fatal night, strictly changed the long and firmly established aspects of my consciousness,” Raiter continued his shock-story, sadly smiling. “Actually I touched upon the intangible.”
Unexpectedly for both of us my old friend kept silent for a minute or two. I really could not dare to break this silence with my eager questions at those uncomfortable seconds, when he did not talk. For a moment, it seemed he did not want to talk at all. So that only smooth crackle of wood in the fireplace had the sure-enough right to be heard all over the living-room. But suddenly Raiter brought his own mind back from the emptiness of oblivion.
“You know, Arny. Sometimes it happens! You live your calm and usual life and you do not take into consideration some difficult things of any sort. Everything is totally simple. You are sure that night alternates day and the winter alternates the summer. By all means in the morning you have your breakfast, then you go to work, and you spend your day being busy with some small affairs that wear you out meanwhile. After this you restore yourself with the good dinner, and later on, these affairs again, — and of course, people too, — just finish you off with some routine, making hundred attempts a work-day to press completely all the drops of your life-juice out. And so after this horror-day you come back home in the evening, may be even feeling little bit happy, and the main reason for a small happiness inside of you is that you know, and I would say, even remember about the good mighty supper that lovely provided to you by Patty — and it (the meal) has being waiting for you for half a hour. And so that, under the curtain of twilights, after a work day, and being full of tasty food, you are really happy and you continue your life, not thinking of something very unbelievable and hard comprehendible for you. Is it so?”
“Well, I hope so, and I believe it to be true for all my life.” I took a drink from my cup.
“Oh, yes, my friend. Before that night I also thought like you,” And again Raiter looked somewhere far, as if he looked into the darkness, beyond vision of the reality, into the nothing. I even felt uneasy just because of his strange and horrific sight. “And I also believed in the existence of something usual and human. However, those events which I sworn myself never to reveal for anybody, even not to think about them, — unfortunately, they distorted a good part of my mind. The natural human part of mine.” Raiter took a deep breath, then he said “That is why I tried answer neither your letter, nor your phone calls for such a long period of time.”
“Hmm… As the matter of fact, your behavior changed badly after your coming back. And indeed I took a notice that it was very unduly of yours. I really feared to admit the mean thought that you could have decided to forget about me and our long friendship forever, as you actively tried to ignore my inner turmoil about you.” Well, here I finally firmed to spit everything out to him, all my burning bad thoughts and emotions that I gained during these last five and a half months after that as Raiter had arrived home from his goddamned adventure.
“Sorry for my weakness.”
Raiter tried to smile a bit again, but it seemed to me that his tears from strange desperation would have occurred easily in his eyes rather, than a simple smile could have shone on his face, paled from something beyond. “I must reveal one bad thing to you, man. I am really scared; I am thrilled to the bones. I feared to confess myself that I couldn’t have lived anymore as I get used to it much earlier. And what I feared most — this is that I couldn’t have bound any longer those nightmares beyond my house, that ugly physical pain inside my head and inside me. You know, Arny. Sometimes it happens, when a long road squeezes you dry so hard and so much that it shocks you, — a state of yours, which is only compared to a bad illness, and then it is just impossible for you to stand without the needed period of incubation even.”
“For Christ’s sake, Raiter!”
I became alarmed badly. A thunderous tempo gathered all the mighty speed in my heart, pumping my blood with the rising rhythm. “What kind of things do you want to tell me about, that you have to use such repulsive and disgusting words as ‘incubation’, or ‘illness’? The Dear Lord of mine! I am scared already and interested at the same time!”
“Well, you just believe me, my friend,” Raiter swallowed a clot and sighed heavily. “You know after my return home, I tried to avoid your company, the other people, and the globe in common, as long as I could, for a very good reason actually. It was a kind of recovery period of mine after this Devilish trip. I thought that nothing would restore my rational mind and my lost freshness of consciousness anymore, which gave me good inspiration for my life on this earth… Everything, any small thing I observed seemed so much vile for me since that trip. I was gradually loosing myself. I just could not feel that I was a real human being, and I did not want to live any longer in this alien world. I did not want to live at all. And so that I needed time to fetch my second wind after this shock.”
“I understand you now, pal.” I looked on my poor friend. “I always knew that your professional motivation will bring you to the personal and tragic disorder some day. Suppose, if you haven’t been so animal-stubborn, your books would have never been so realistic and fascinating. Well, at least, this your personal streak still improves itself. I will not argue, of course, but it is dangerous enough for your life, let me be opened.”
“So, I am concerned that it is not the motivation itself which is dangerous in my case, but the most dangerous thing is the final result of my dark motivation.”
“I’m really sorry you, old pal. That’s a pity.” I let down my head, then again raised my eyes, and I stared at the tongues of fire in the fireplace. Actually I did not want to look on Raiter’s face. I think he felt it, and probably, he also stared at the fire. “You are an interesting man of letter, not just simply writer, but respectful person by yourself. And that is the great part! I’ve just been always worried about you, and I’ve been aware of your hard intention to get the craziest thrills for inspiration. Sometimes it is madness. And it was frightful thing for me to even imagine what the demonic power possessed you there, so far away from home, what situations have you been involved in, and whom have you been lived and communicated with. Dear Lord. From time to time, you can be so unbearable and unpredictable, that you cannot control your thirst for inspiration. That is not so amazing, in my point.”
“Well, maybe that is why my books turn sensations, busting all blocks, onwards. How do you think?”
“And again I will not argue with you about the means.” I nodded positively. “I just tired of such a killing anguish and mysteries. I am torn apart from the scary secret you conceal from me.”
“I’m not simply sure how ready you are for this revelation of mine, pal. That is why I could not decide to tell anybody about it,” Raiter frowned. “But after all, you’re the best friend of mine. And I, perhaps, will lose my head totally, if I would not tell you my secret. Yes, I cannot keep silence myself any longer. Trust me; I’ve been keeping it for so very long time. And now I am tired of it.”
“Oh, half a year, this is a great term.”
And again Raiter gave me a sort of smile and nodded his head. I noticed at that very moment that his smile shone his face for a few seconds. And this time it appeared to be more spontaneously, than the previous one. As for me, — I knew Raiter well, so that I could easily understand that he smiled from the very deep of his heart.
“To keep silence forever… For me it means not to live. Even not to exist at all.” He came across the essence pensively. “So I want not simply exist, but to live! Because I want to shout all over this place, as loudly as I can, about the nightmare I’ve experienced. Although I shouted enough at my own place, while I was trying to pull myself together and to recover my mind after this mad journey. So now I will be reserved, strange and mystic.”
“Suppose, it will be pleasant to hear. Well, fire from all the guns at once!” I lighted off some candles in the living-room and then I stared at Raiter, who crossed his hands on his chest, being ready to open all his secrets to me at that late evening.”
“Are you really sure that you’re ready?” He asked me finally.
“I am all ears! I am all yours!” I thrilled.
“All right… It will be very scary…” Raiter took a deep breath barely. “Old pal, have you ever spoken with a living brain of a dead person? The brain that flies, like mosquito, or something else right in the middle of your room, one February coldest night? And have you ever heard the voice of this living brain? How creepy could it sound? And which frightened me most of this, — is that how it jelly-brain thing calls itself ‘The Kronos’… Yes! That almighty ancient God, The Master of Time and Space, The Ruler of The Eternity, The Essence of The Infinity.”
“Damn on you, crazy you are! Are totally ill?” I screamed in terror towards Raiter, when he took out from his thick jacket a revolver and put it right to his head. At that mad moment I was threatened from the cold wind, from the dark underworld beyond.
“Yes! Now I’ll show you, my good friend, what it means to experience the Infinity of my craziest journey, the Infinity of the whole Universe! Behold!!!”
“Hey, man! Stop it right now! Don’t do this! Don’t!!!” I begged him. But it was too late to stop my crazy-ill friend. Hardly audible echo of gun-shot spread all over the living-room. The Raiter’s dead body fallen right to my feet, on my gray rug between two armchairs. The wallpapers in the darkness crusted with horrible and ugly spots of blood and also with some pieces of dying flesh.
The whole my body was shaking from such a horrific scene. Soon I felt like my heart is beating so fast, ready to explode itself, and I would have puked all my organs out of the body. Disgusting! And my blood streams were bursting so hard, that I could not hear anything for some time.
I stood still without any move at all, in the silence of darkness, in the suicide-night. I felt the puking stink of Raiter’s flesh and blood all around me. Everything got muddied in my eyes, my head was swimming, and I thought I even will faint right now.
“Kronos… Me…” Suddenly the kind of mighty roar from beyond the nature shot into my ears. Soon I heard a strange sound, reminding me a crack of bones, as if something had torn the Raiter’s lifeless body and his bones. This ugly sound repeated. “The Infinity…”
Epilogue
The one thing I still remember nowadays…
After all these years, is that how I ran out of my house that night, pondering not a second, and when I ran into the street, hitting upon some rare passers-by, and trying to get some help, they just scolded me badly and pushed me away from them insolently like a crazy maniac. Good “kind-hearted” people they were. But the scariest thing of all was, — I had a feeling, as if that Kronos’ Voice followed me all the time. And that voice took some characteristics of my poor old friend’s voice, may the earth lie light upon him.
What can I also add?
Do I have a right to blame or judge Mr. Raiter? I suppose, no. He was just a poor man in his middle thirties. And the evil madness devoured him, or maybe it was the real Devil’s deeds…
All I know is that from the very moment my good friend left me; I have never heard again that amorphic fright voice of Lord of Darkness and The Infinity, The Kronos, which gave me a strangest puzzle of all — What is The Infinity? And what is beyond?
But even now I have that creepy feeling, as if it still stalks me, and it hides at every corner, by every door, somewhere in the darkness. And it still makes me turn my head around any time, when I stay alone…
