Anne of Green Gables is the first and most famous novel by Canadian writer Lucy Maud Montgomery. The action takes place at the end of the 19th century. Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert decide to adopt a teenage boy so that he would help them with the housework at their house Green Gables. But instead of him, a red-haired girl, Anne Shirley, arrives, and her appearance marks the beginning of real adventures. The novel was published in 1908. Now it is one of the most popular children's books in the world, the novel has been translated into 36 languages and has sold more than 50 million copies.
