The Buccaneers

Wharton’s last novel was left unfinished at the time of her death in 1937 and so it was published in that state the following year. The story concerns five wealthy and ambitious American girls and the noble, but impoverished Englishmen that marry them. As the novel progresses, the plot focuses in detail on Nan and her marriage to the Duke of Tintagel.  Wharton’s manuscript ends with Lizzy inviting Nan to a house party to which Guy Thwarte has been invited to. After a careful study of the synopsis and notes, Wharton scholar Marion Mainwaring finished the novel in 1993.
