Do you believe in horoscopes?
Chapter 1
Alice is a young woman. She works in an office as an accountant. She likes her job.
Her friends at work call her “Miss Marple”. Alice loves detective books. Her favorite writer is Agatha Christie. She also likes puzzles, horoscopes, and coffee. Every morning, she drinks coffee with milk and reads her horoscope.
“Bad luck for Leo all day!” reads Alice.
Today, the office is noisy.
“What's wrong?” Alice asks her colleague Max.
“Boss's laptop is missing. He thinks someone stole it!” answers Max.
Max is a designer. Today he is sad as usual because his girlfriend left him last month.
The boss enters the room. He is angry.
“Alice, to my office! Now!”
In the office, there are two people: the HR manager and Tara, the cleaner.
“Yes, I think I saw her yesterday”, Tara says.
“Alice, you were the last to leave yesterday, right?” HR asks calmly.
“That's right”.
Alice is confused. Why are they asking her this?
“Do you think that I took the laptop?” she guesses.
“We do not know. But we need to check your desk,” HR continues dryly.
They go to her workplace and open Alice's desk drawer.
“This is the key to my office!” the boss exclaims. “Can you explain that?”

But wait! Somebody unlocks the boss's office! This person probably left through the back door. There are no cameras there.

“Don't worry about this,” says Mrs. Brown. “The police searched here.”
“Did they suspect you?” asks Peters.
“They checked all the museum workers. Then they found that tool in Johnny's bag. Poor boy! Why did he steal?”
“Does he say why?”
“No. He says he didn't do it.”
“Did they find the stolen manuscript?”
“No. Maybe his crime partner has it.”
“His partner? Can it be another security guard – Mike?”
“Maybe. Mike didn't come to work today.”
“Why?”
“I don't know. He doesn't answer the phone.”
“Can I have his address?”
“Here. The police wanted to talk to him too. If he stole, they would arrest him.”

Old manor mystery

Detective Peters is drinking his morning favourite drink – black coffee. Just then, his secretary knocks on the door and says:
“Katherine Montgomery, a niece of Sir Archibald Montgomery, is on the phone. She wants to hire you for some family story”.
Detective Peters answers the phone. The client doesn't want to talk much. She invites him to her family's manor.
The next morning, Detective Peters takes the train and arrives at the Montgomery manor. A butler in a black suit opens the door. Inside, the house looks rich and beautiful. There are many old paintings on the walls. The butler takes Peters to a large living room where five people are waiting:
Miss Katherine Montgomery (a niece),
Mr. Richard Montgomery (Archibald's son) and his wife Anna,
Their son Daniel,
Miss Sophia Evans (a distant cousin),
Mr. Davis (the family lawyer).
They introduce themselves.
Mr. Davis explains the problem:
“Sir Archibald Montgomery died last week. His will is very strange:
'The one who remembers my habit will get everything. Look where darkness meets light.'”

Detective Peters walks around the manor. Mr. Davis, the family lawyer, shows the detective Sir Archibald's study and the safe where the important papers are kept. The safe looks strange – it doesn't have a normal lock or numbers. Nobody knows how to open it.
“When we solve the will riddle, we'll understand how to open the safe”, thinks the detective. “The words 'where darkness meets light' must tell us where to look. But what does it mean?”
The detective decides to stay in the house for a few days. At dinner time, the family doesn't look happy. Mr. and Mrs. Montgomery are arguing. Their son Daniel is chatting on his phone. Katherine looks worried. Only Sophia seems sad. Katherine asks:
“Detective, did you solve the riddle yet?”
“Not yet, Miss Montgomery.”
“We pay you for every hour! Why don't you work harder?”
“I'm trying my best,” says Peters. “But I need your help. You knew Sir Archibald well. For example, what did he like for dinner?”

There, they look carefully around the fireplace and the armchair. The butler makes a fire in the fireplace. In the firelight, Katherine sees words written on the wall:
“I hope you remember my evening habits. But does anyone remember what I said every morning? These words are THE KEY.”
Katherine gets very angry.
“Why did he make this so difficult?” she shouts.
“Maybe he wanted us to remember him, not just his money”, Sophia says quietly.
“Now we remember that stupid old man for his stubbornness!” Katherine replies. “I guess that he didn't want to leave anything to his family at all!”.
It's long after midnight. Everyone is tired. Detective Peters goes to his bed in a guest's room. As he lies in bed, he thinks:

“What's wrong?” wonders the detective. Katherine Montgomery answers angrily:
“I am sure that servants know the key phrase.”
“But they don't want to tell us! Maybe they want the money for themselves!” continues Mr. Montgomery. The detective tries to help:
“Miss Katherine, I am sure that's impossible. Sir Archibald might leave them small gifts, but the big house and money will go to the family.”
“Only if you start doing your work!” Katherine leaves the hall furiously. Mr. Montgomery follows her.
“Detective Peters… can we talk?” Now the detective notices the third person in the hall – Sophia.
“I didn't know Sir Archibald well”, says the woman when they come to the study. “I only visited the manor twice a year, on holidays. But I remember something… It might be silly…”
“There's never harm in trying”, the detective smiles to Sophia.
“May you be safe and sound. That's what he said once when we were on the morning walk in the garden”.

“The person who remembers my morning words gets my house and money,” reads Mr. Davis aloud. “Others can take one porcelain dog each from my collection.”
For a moment, nobody speaks.
“Sophia remembered the words”, finally Detective Peters says. Mr. Davis nods.
“Well, if so, she is the main heir. I'll prepare the documents to sign”, answers the lawyer and opens his case.
“That's nonsense!” exclaims Katherine angrily.

School's secret
Chapter 1
It is a sunny day in May. School students feel lazy. They want to run outdoors, play football and volleyball, swim in lakes and ride bikes. But they must go to classes and study math, biology, chemistry and other boring subjects.
But today is special day. Something strange happens. Last night, someone wrote on the school website:
“This day makes me think of 1993.”
The students are excited. They want to talk about the message. What happened in 1993? No one knows. Only some teachers remember but they are not in the mood to spend precious class time on gossiping. Mr. Lockhart, the history teacher, says:
“Sometimes it's better not to disturb the past”.
Marcus, (or Marc as his best friend Danny calls him), is deeply interested in that mystery. He talks to his friend Danny:
“Maybe an accident happened”, says Marc.
“Or a murder!”, adds Danny.
Liza, their classmate and the best group student, hears what they just said. She exclaims:
“If it was a crime or accident, everyone would know!”
“Do you have any other ideas?” asks Danny, offended.
“What if I do?” She smiles and shows an old notebook. “It was in my library coursebook. It's a diary dated 1993!”

It's 3 p. m. All students go home, but Marc, Danny and Liza are reading the mysterious diary. The notebook is thin. The author writes about school routine, classes and homework, about teachers and classmates. Nothing interesting.
“The author is a girl”, decides Liza.
“Of course, it's a girl”, agrees Danny. “Boys don't write diaries!”
“And don't wear dresses”, answers Liza, annoyed. She shows a part where the girl is writing about her preparation for a school talent contest.
The friends read that the girl was good at singing and was sure that she could win the main prize – a silver cup. Unfortunately, it's the end of the diary. The students think. Then Marc gets an idea:
“Maybe she became famous. Let's check the school's ex-students board of honour!”
Indeed, on the board they see a photo of a woman singing:
Katherine Clare,
graduated 1993
Liza shouts, “It's her!”
“What are you doing at school? Classes are all over!”
Mr. Lockhart appears suddenly. He looks annoyed. Liza says:
“Sorry, Mr. Lockhart, we just want to know more about famous school's ex-students. I heard that Katherine Clare was so good at singing that she even took part in the school talent contest in 1993!”
“That's not true. There weren't any talent contests that year.”

“How does he know?” asks Marc.
“Maybe he worked at the school in 1993?” answers Danny.
“No. He was too young then. Maybe he was a student”, says Liza.
After music class, Liza stays in the room. The music teacher, Mrs. Simpson is one of the oldest teachers in the school. Liza asks about the school talent contest. The teacher answers:
“Yes, there was a contest before. But there was a problem with a silver cup. The old headteacher left. The new headteacher stopped the contest.”
“What has happened?”
“It seems the cup was stolen, and they never found who did it. Because it was very expensive, the old director was blamed.”
Marc reads the diary again. He sees the name “Alaric.” He is a friend of Katherine. They argued: Alaric talked about the cup and how much money it could be worth, but for Katherine, winning and being recognized were important, not the cup.
Liza and Marc tell Danny what they learnt. Danny says:
“What a strange name!”
Suddenly, they hear Mrs. Simpson call, “Alaric!”
The history teacher, Mr. Lockhart, answers.

Then, the friends tell Katherine about the strange message on the school website. They say who they think might have stolen the cup. They ask Katherine if she knows anything.
Katherine replies:

Mrs. Simpson looks at Liza sadly.
“I knew someone would find the truth one day,” she says.
“Did… you write this?” Liza sits down carefully next to her.
The teacher nods and wipes a tear.
“Every year in May, I think about that day. Katherine was like a daughter to me. The cup disappeared. Somebody thought she took it. She was the last person in the hall. I knew she was not guilty. Some school investigation was held and they proved it was not her.” Her voice stops.
“Who took the cup?” Liza whispers.

“I don't know”, says Marc. “Let's ask Mr. Lockhart directly.”
“What if he becomes angry?” asks Danny.
“This also is the answer!” exclaims Liza.
The three friends go to Mr. Lockhart's classroom and knock. When he opens, they all start talking at once. “Slow down!” Mr. Lockhart laughs. “What's wrong?”
Liza tells him everything. Mr. Lockhart is not smiling now.
“Well… It was a silly joke,” he says. “Someone took the cup, but it broke. They were afraid to tell the truth.”
“No theft?” asks Marc.
“No. But hiding the truth was bad. As I said, sometimes it's better not to disturb the past.”
The friends feel feared to ask. But then Liza finally asks:
“Did you break it, Mr. Lockhart?”
But the history teacher already went back to his classroom.
Later, Danny asks, “Do we tell anyone?”

A true masterpiece
Chapter 1
Christopher Baker is a famous art critic. He knows a lot about the Northern Renaissance, especially about art from the Netherlands. Today, he and his best friend Nicole go to an exhibition. The exhibition shows paintings by Jan van der Merweld.
“I don't know this artist,” says Nicole. “Why is everyone talking about him?”
“Because of his painting 'Portrait of an Antwerp Merchant',” says Christopher. “Jan van der Merweld lived at the same time as Hieronymus Bosch, but he was not famous. Now, people think this painting is a masterpiece.”
“Will you write about it?” asks Nicole.
“Yes, I must. Now, Merweld is very popular in the art world”, says Christopher.
“I think he won't be angry if you don't like the painting”, laughs Nicole.
Many people are at the gallery. Everyone likes the painting. Christopher likes it too. The painting reminds him of works by Hans Holbein and Albrecht Dürer. It shows a rich merchant from Antwerp. The man wears expensive black clothes. Van der Merweld paints fabrics very well. There are also small details – a sandglass and a tulip. They remind people that time and money can disappear quickly.
Christopher is happy he saw the exhibition. But something feels strange. When he is in bed, he thinks: “The painting is too perfect. That's not normal!”

“I don't think it's the original,” answers Christopher.
“You mean – a fake?!” Nicole is surprised.
“If yes, it will be a big scandal!”
“And you are the most famous art critic in the country. Why does 'The Merchant' seem strange to you?”
“All week I studied the artist's other works, and 'Portrait of an Antwerp Merchant' is very different. Today I'm going to the city library. Maybe I'll find more information in the Renaissance section.”
Christopher spends the whole weekend in the library. He reads many books about old Dutch painters but finds nothing new. The painting's style is similar to many Dutch artists, so it's hard to say it's really by Jan van der Merweld.
Then Christopher ventures to call his colleague, an art critic and the museum curator, John. John is very busy with a new exhibition but agrees to meet next week. He is surprised that Christopher's doubts the painting and wants to dispel his colleague's fears.

“You should go to the police! The person who wrote this note can be a criminal! You are in danger.”
Christopher agrees and goes to the police station. They take his report, but Christopher has nothing except the letter. The police think he just wants to make himself and the painting more famous. They don't think that it's serious. “Maybe he is lying”, they say.
On the day the painting arrives, there is a car accident in front of his building. Ambulance and police come. There is a crowd.
Christopher looks out of the window. He understands that one of the cars – is a van from the art gallery. The painting must be inside it.
Christopher runs outside. He goes to the van. The driver is okay. They see the lock on the back is broken. The van is empty. They think that somebody caused a car accident on purpose. And in the chaos the painting disappears.
The driver and Christopher tell the police everything. Christopher talks about the scary note. The police will look for answers.
That night, Christopher calls Nikole to tell about the accident. He is worried. Suddenly the doorbell rings. When Christopher opens the door, there is nobody there but a paper note on the floor. It says:
“I TOLD YOU NO POLICE

At the police station, the officers talk to Christopher. They tell him a name: James Whitmore Jr. They ask Christopher:
“Do you know this man?”
“The painting was his”, answers Christopher. “I asked him about the art examination of the 'Portrait of an Antwerp Merchant' but he ignored me.”
The police found out that Mr. Whitmore came to the city for work this week. They are going to question him.
Christopher gives both threatening notes to the police. Now, the police will analyze the handwriting and find out who wrote them.
When Christopher leaves the police station, he thinks: “Is Mr. Whitmore behind the accident? He doesn't want to discuss doubtful authorship of the painting. Then he sells it quickly although he can earn a lot of money by renting it. Now he is in the city, when the theft happens. Or is it just my fantasy?”
