Kate Orme is young and naive, unaware of the cruelty that lies within human nature. Her fiancé, Denis Peyton, a simple and straightforward man, has viewed life as an exceedingly pleasant affair since birth. Essentially, Kate knows little about him until she discovers that Denis is capable of acting dishonestly and meanly — and, crucially, failing to grasp the error of his ways. After all, the high society of the Gilded Age lives by omissions and compromises — who is to blame that these are sometimes compromises with one’s own conscience? Kate is in turmoil: should she cancel the engagement? What if, by doing so, she makes things worse: saves herself but betrays her unborn son, whose image is already so vivid in her mind? And will the son, when grown up, justify his mother’s sacrifice — or follow in his father’s footsteps?
