Etsuko, born into a prominent samurai family and raised in the traditions of feudal Japan, has a childhood governed by strict rituals, with her future predetermined. But the rapidly approaching 20th century disrupts the seemingly immutable order, and the aspirations of the Inagaki family crumble — Etsu is now betrothed to a Japanese merchant living in Ohio. The young girl, unfamiliar with the English language and American culture, must embark on a long journey to another part of the world, manage to preserve herself in a foreign land, and become truly happy, learning to combine Japanese loyalty to duty with American openness to new experiences.
